Since then, this musical about the May-September union between an aging immigrant grape grower and his young mail-order bride in the Napa Valley of the 1920's has proved too problematic for frequent revival. The original production, while well received, had the misfortune to be overshadowed by "My Fair Lady," which beat it to Broadway by two months in 1956. Though "The Most Happy Fella," the haunting and spectacularly ambitious show Frank Loesser wrote after "Guys and Dolls," is receiving two major stagings this year - one at the Goodspeed Opera House here through July 12, the other to open at the New York City Opera in September - it has always been the most unlucky musical.
